2014 Smoke on the River
Friday and Saturday September 5 & 6
Entering it's 8th year, Quincy's Smoke on the River barbecue contest continues to grow among pit masters.
"It's an event held right on Quincy Bay, with plenty of space and pavement to park on" Said 2014 event chairman Jimmy Louthan.
The event, sponsored by the Exchange Club of Quincy, has more than doubled in size since its inception eight years ago.
Exchange is the country’s oldest service organization operating exclusively in the United States and sponsors activities designed to benefit, award and develop our nation’s youth, promote crime prevention, serve senior citizens and recognize military and public safety service providers. Exchange also promotes Americanism programs, and its national project is the prevention of child abuse
Once again, Smoke on the River will feature music and activities in addition to all the food. The event features pit masters from Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Indiana. Watching the teams set up shop, Awerkamp said, is one of his favorite parts of the weekend.
Certified judges will be taste-testing the barbecued offerings from Smoke on the River contestants . The grillers will be fighting for a top prize of $6,500. The award ceremony is scheduled for about 3 p.m. Saturday.
All proceeds will go toward various Quincy Exchange Club projects
